2000 Plymouth Prowler
Chrysler engineers were given free rein to design whatever they wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. Chrysler's design and international director Thomas C. Gale said his "love for 1930s-era hot rods inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the retro-styled Plymouth Prowler". Gale, who has a hotted up 1932 Ford in his garage approved the hotrod-inspired Plymouth Prowler as the company's follow-up show-stopper to the Dodge Viper. An early influence is credited to a Chrysler-sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design that resulted in a thesis by Douglas "Chip" Foose that included drawings of a retro-roadster. Foose designed it as a coupe for Chrysler to begin with but modified it to a roadster version.
For consignment, a retro styled hot rod, with all the modern fixins' and just 52,539 title verified original miles. This roadster version of rolling art sits upon an all aluminum frame, and has straight panels. Open fender front wheels, and a curvaceous back, reminiscent of the old hump backs with their rumble seat, you are poised for the hanky drop in the LA river basin thinking about 1946, but in reality, existing in the present.
Exterior
With sculpted shape, a V style horizontal ribbed grille, front fenders that go with the flow of the front wheels, and halogen lens headlights, you are experiencing a fine mix of bygone design cues, and modern technology. A cleaner look has been added to the front with the floating bumpers removed, but they are included with your purchase. A chopped style canvas convertible in black covers the 2-seater, and as we go to the back a curved rear deck, more sculpted hang off the sides, fenders, and fiberglass bumpers. Bright Silver Metallic in near perfect condition covers the exterior with only a few minor scuffs down low. The grille presents nicely, as do the front 17-inch, and rear 20-inch chromed 5 spoke wheels. That will do it for the chrome, and the exterior.
Interior
Inside, the past has been left behind and now for the passengers the dual high-backed buckets draped in Ebony leather with integrated roll bars in the headrests, sit snugly within the compartment. These buckets have nicely stitched smooth panels, and some extra padded bolsters for that curve carving which will inevitably go on when behind the wheel of this speedster. A center console races forward to the dash, and houses a large glovebox, the shifter, and tiptronic "autostick" button. Moving upward we note the factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo, air flow controls and a large "ovoid" air vent. Directly above the center is a stretched oval in silver covering that houses the gauges, with the speedo in the direct center with a digital readout. On top of the steering column is a factory installed Auto Meter tachometer. A flip up rear lid reveals the covered area for the top and just a little storage. Black carpet floods the floors, and a note to the convertible top the rear window is glass.
Drivetrain
A pop of the long V style hood and we see a 3.5 liter V6 with EFI that is capable of generating 254hp. This is nicely preserved and clean. Out back is a 4-speed automatic and a 3.89 rear axle spins the big 20-inch rear tires.
Undercarriage
All clean and rust free on the floor pans and the frame which is aluminum X frame material. Independent coil over suspension is seen all around with chrome cladding up front, as are power disc brakes on both the front and rear. A stainless OEM dual exhaust, all rust free, can be seen working their way rearward to the chromed tips at the end.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up and on the test track performed beautifully. It has snappy acceleration, good handling, good braking, and a smooth, fairly quiet cruise. All functions were working just fine, and the interior was spacious and comfortable. The central dash takes a bit to become accustomed to but is a nice design feature.
From 2000 the Prowler, Plymouth's version of the modern-day hot rod. If you want something that not very many have, and was produced by a manufacturer en mass, reliable, and has modern features with that retro look, then look no further... this is your stopping point. Rev the engine and drop the hanky. LA here we come!
