This 36K-Mile 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout Is Preserved Malaise-Era Luxury

Sometimes youre looking for a time capsule, not a track time. If youre longing to spend some time in a bygone era, theres not a lot that encapsulates the mid-1970s quite like an AMC product. And this Hornet Sportabout is basically a leisure suit dripping with disco sweat, sporting a Jimmy Carter campaign button and ready to dig into an open-face meatloaf and mashed-potato sandwich. Unlike many trends from an oft-mocked decade, however, this AMC (being offered up over at Hemmings Auctions ) looks like itll endure. There are just 36,000 miles on the clock, and thats barely broken in for the 258-cubic-inch inline-six, as it's an engine with a legendary reputation for longevity if not outright power. The deluxe interior is described as like-new and looks it, although its vast plastic expanses and flat-as-toast seating are archaic by any modern standard. Its not quite a museum piece, but its the perfect daily for an iconoclastor something to hire out to film and TV producers making something set in the period. --> The Sportabout part of its name refers to the four-door wagon body style and harkens to a time in which a compact wagon was a fairly normal way to get around. That makes it a practical classic, too, with plenty of room in back for all stuff to make yourself comfortable at a car show. This example has minor and understandable needs and, like a lot of classics from this era, should go for a reasonable price. Its a great way to dip a toe into the collector-car hobby or a good acquisition for a diehard AMC enthusiast looking to build out a collection. Itll be fun to own if not necessarily to drivebut sometimes its about just enjoying the experience for what it is.
