Iconic 1950s Formula 1 Build: Ant Anstead Master Mechanic Preview

Wheeler Dealers Ant Anstead is taking the summer off to focus on his dream build on the new series Ant Anstead Master Mechanic! Sign up for a free trial of the MotorTrend App and start streaming now! We all wish it was easy to take a hiatus from everyday life to work on the project weve always dreamed of building, and its a wish shared by Wheeler Dealers co-host Ant Anstead. With the show taking a short break, Ant finally has time to work on his dream project on a new 12-part series titled Ant Anstead Master Mechanic . The car is an Alfa Romeo 158 Formula 1 car of which only six were ever build, and all cost north of $15 million. Ants, however, will be a bit cheaper. His version of the iconic boat-tail, open-wheel champion will be cobbled together from spares and donor cars of a similar ilk, with some handmade elements as well. We may not be talking fire-breathing American muscle, but the 158s success in 1950s road racing cemented it in the history books and acted as the midwife for Ferrari. These cars won every race they entered and were built during a time where racing all over the world required a certain creativity and tenacity that all hot rodders share. --> Theres no doubting Ants skill in the fine art of wielding anything from a welder to a hammer or a socket wrench, as demonstrated in Wheeler Dealers . But with such a specific vehicle and a baby on the way in three months, he will call on a select few talented individuals within this circle of car people. A few celebrity car buddies, other Motor Trend talent, and master craftsmen will surely be coming on the show and lend their expertise, before all his attention gets yanked off the car and onto his newborn. The ultimate goal is to relive one of the most iconic eras of racing by taking the car to Indianapolis and run it around the Brickyard to pay homage to the one race that the 158 never ran. This series will be as much a build show, as it will be a documentary of Ants life during this intensive build. I have no formal qualifications to be a mechanic, Ant said while sipping coffee outside his shop. I never went to college to be a mechanic, I never trained to be a mechanic. I had a passion for building cars when I was a kid, and I just ran with that passion. I made loads and loads of mistakes, learned from people, modified things, and ultimately arrived in a position now where Im confident in building the special.
