Cougar was always Mustang's more upscale cousin, and they often shared similar powertrain options, making Cougar the right choice for those looking for Boss or Mach 1 performance with a level of amenities higher than those Ford offered. Upgrading to the XR-7 model only accentuated the difference. XR-7 interior appointments included vinyl high-back bucket seats with leather trim; wood-grained accents on the dash, console and steering wheel, and a toggle switch panel in the center of the dashboard. One of those switches in this car is dedicated to the operation of the power convertible top. The 4-speed transmission came with a Hurst shifter with a beefy T-handle.
XR-7 models also received unique exterior features, including a center grille emblem, wheel covers and a remote racing-style rearview mirror. The Cougar went through a mild facelift for 1970 with an all-new grille and taillight treatment. And then, a complete makeover for 1971 made the Cougar larger and heavier, with more of an emphasis on luxury than performance. That makes this XR-7 convertible something of a milestone, the end of a remarkable era for the Cougar and Mercury itself.
Only 17 Cougars Convertibles came with 428 Cobra Jet 4-speed drivetrains in 1970 and this exceptionally rare example is the only one that came out of the factory in this color combination. A true 1 of 1 factory build.
