1978 Harley Davidson 75th Anniversary 1200cc Electra-Glide Motorcycle
In June 2023, the Harley Davidson operations facility in nearby York, Pennsylvania resumed limited operations after a shut down a week earlier was forced due to a parts shortage. Once that was resolved, 1,000 employees went back to work building America's most iconic motorcycle, just a stone's throw, and about 45 minutes from Morgantown!
For consignment, a 1978 Harley Davidson 75th Anniversary Electra-Glide motorcycle with a title verified 19,432 actual miles. This is the last of the 74ci OHV Harleys and as our consignor states, "the 75th Anniversary designation enhances the collectability of this motorcycle, surely among the finest unmodified examples to be found anywhere." Let's take a closer look and confirm! While this bike looks the part, some mechanical TLC is in order to get this storage fresh hog ready for the road.
Exterior
If a motorcycle can be handsome, and they can, this one takes the cake in its warm two tone brown paint covering the fenders, "batwing" fairing, gas tank, side cases, and trunk. Even the tank call out is done in brown with cream colored borders and this pattern repeats on the anniversary feature on the front fender. A fender light lens remarkably takes on a cream tone within its chrome casing and the leather seat is appropriately brown instead of black. The headlight is flanked by fog lights as dual amber lights while two more extend to the sides of the tail light. A chrome crash bar encircles the side cases and flairs out in front of the engine. The exterior, including visible engine parts and covers, is in excellent condition. King of the Highway is posted on each saddle bag and FLH is a virtual Easter egg found on the back of the front fender.
Functionality
Smooth grips welcome black encased thumb switches on each side and if we're being picky, there's a slight patina on each. Footboards are on board with optional foot pegs on the crash bar, and the passenger gets a set of pegs as well. The instrument panel includes a speedometer, several indicator lights, and a dial to open circuits to lights, ignition, and accessories.
Drivetrain
On the frame, we have a 74ci V-twin with a 1-barrel Tillotson carburetor. It has a 4-speed manual that sends power to the rear wheel via change drive. Dual exhaust exit low on each side of the rear wheel and suspension consists of a telescopic fork with a swinging fork in back. Disc brakes are found on both of the 16-inch chrome wire wheels. The bike runs on a 12 volt system.
This Harley presents in clean condition and will grace your collection with the warmth of its brown palette and brightness of its chrome accessories. It's one of those bikes that will look great in your garage but would be right at home as a piece of aesthetic furniture in your living room!
