The AA was offered in a plethora of wheelbases, cargo capacities and commercial body configurations. This stake-bodied 1929 Ford Model AA truck was rated at a 1.5-ton load capacity. The seller bought it after seeing it on display at a car show and restored it in 1996. It has only covered about 150 road miles since, winning numerous trophies at events in the interim. It still presents impressively and is said to operate reliably.
POWERTRAIN
The four-cylinder L-head engine, the same base unit found in the Model A passenger cars, displaces 201-cubic inches and receives its fuel from a Zenith updraft carburetor, was manufactured with a 4.22:1 compression ratio and was rated at 40 horsepower. The seller believes the engine in this AA is original to the truck, though it cannot be definitively determined. Its rebuild history is not specified, but the engine is said to start willingly following a multi-step procedure that involves setting the choke, fuel adjustment and timing. A new wiring harness and horn diaphragm have been installed. This AA utilizes a four-speed transmission that includes an ultra-low first gear. The floor foot lever shifts all three gears to a lower range for very heavy loads and hill climbing. The transmission is said to shift properly. Some fluid leakage is noted beneath the transmission when the truck is left unused for an extended period. The engine block and cylinder head wear correct Ford green engine paint, and the engine bay is acceptably clean, with surface corrosion visible on the exhaust manifold and the water

The AA’s paint is believed to date from the truck’s 1996 restoration and is said to remain in excellent condition, with no body blemishes reported by the seller. No dings or dents on the bodywork are noted. According to the seller, there is no rust. The cab has an external sun visor and dual mirrors. The polished radiator shell appears to be in very good condition. Some pitting can be observed on the headlamp trim rings and top of the radiator. The running boards have Ford-branded step plates affixed and some minor cracking of the paint can be observed where the front fenders meet. The stake body has metal uprights. The wood on the cargo floor and the stake sides appears to be in excellent condition, along with the mounting strips on the floor. The AA’s underside presents cleanly, with only minor soiling and a few spots of surface corrosion. No issues are reported with the truck’s glass, and the exterior lighting functional.

The AA has oversized tires on wire wheels that are said to have most of their tread remaining. The tires sometimes flat-spot if the truck is parked for an extended period, according to the seller, who adds that some play is evident with the unassisted steering, but it’s said to track straight. There is no known damage or functional problems noted with the suspension, although the seller says a lubrication is in order. The mechanical drum brakes are said to work well within their limitations.
