1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
In 1966, 27,720 Corvettes were built and of them, 17,762 of them were convertibles. 3,366 total cars were colored Rally Red and 7,591 of the total cars had 4-speed manual transmissions. As you can see, Corvettes are some of the most well documented cars in American history and have had an enthusiastic following since 1953. The 1966 is among the favorites of the C2's, the second generation of a model now in its eighth iteration.
For consignment, a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, a two top car in Rally Red with a relatively recent engine rebuild, a one year old hardtop restoration, and a brand new soft top in the box that will accompany the car.
Exterior
Gleaming like a beacon, the Rally Red shines bright, and who doesn't love a red Corvette? Described as a Coke bottle on wheels, the C2 Vettes have lovely rising and slightly flared fenders and the fronts are bisected by the spear shaped hood bulge while the rear fenders flank a raised center line, elongated when the top is down. This Vette is quite a show, and the supporting players include the hidden headlights, the triple slotted fender vents, and the quad tail lights. Top the car with the matching accessory hardtop and you've got a clean machine ready for any kind of weather. The metal work is in great condition here, including the rocker trim, 15-inch wheel covers, and window framing. The current canvas top on the car is weathered, stained, and has a few tears, but a new one is waiting in the wings. Other imperfections include numerous locations of cracking paint, multiple scratches, touched up spots, and chipped paint.
Interior
Double window cranks highlight the red formed door panels with the costar being the knob topped door actuator. Low back bucket seats wear red vinyl and textured tuck and roll patterned inserts and they look great with the exception of a blemish on the driver's lower. The red is interrupted on the interior only for the wood rimmed steering wheel and black backed gauge cluster, an arching display of six dials with critical information for the driver, all in good condition. The center stack consists of a clock, vent control knobs, radio knobs, and the vertically mounted radio. This thin stack allows for plenty of legroom for the occupants where they can stretch their feet on an orange toned red carpet covering the footwells and the rear cargo area. The chrome shifter and red surround in the center console is immaculate.
Drivetrain
Under the reverse opening hood we find a very clean, date-correct 327ci L79 V8 power plant, fueled by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor that is not original but likely helps keep the horsepower rating at 350. The Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission may be date-correct but the stampings are not fully readable. Power is transferred to the back where it meets 3.70 gears with Positraction and drum brakes are found front and rear.
Undercarriage
Relatively clean and dry underneath where the dual exhaust encounters stock style mufflers and the exit with next level coolness via chrome tips through the rear valance and the openings are sleeved in polished metal. Very little surface rust and no errant fluids underneath where coil springs are located for the front and the rear is Corvette's complex system of a frame mounted differential, tubular axle drive shafts, transverse strut rods, torque control arms, and transverse leaf springs.
Drive-Ability
This is a clean and tidy interior which, with the top down, provides it endless visibility and fun. The 327 cuber cranks to life with a sweet rumble and rolls onto the test loop in style. There is power on tap and the car tracks straight and handles well, braking is great and downshifts help slow the roll. For non functional items, our notes indicate the power antenna is not working, the clock is not spinning, and the brake lights and reverse lights do not illuminate. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Little red Corvette, baby you're much too fast, yes you are! We almost made it through this description without referencing Prince, but there ya go. Here's a classic Corvette that is well sorted, clean, and in good running condition but it's not a concours car, which means you can drive the heck out of it and have fun without losing sleep or worrying about that first scratch. It's got the bones for the next level if that's the road you choose, but as is, it's a great car for show and go.
