1992 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Convertible

Description:

1992 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Convertible

"This is the final year of the familiar F-body style that has served Camaros and Firebirds since 1982. The fact that the appearance remains contemporary despite being essentially unchanged since its introduction all those years ago is testimony to the timelessness of its design. The 1969 Trans Am was one of the best handling domestic cars in its day, and the 1992 version carries on that tradition well. Tire and suspension technologies have moved ahead by light years over what they were when the T/A model appeared, and the latest version is a flat handling, tail out, corner carving champ, capable of 0.87g in lateral acceleration." Road and Track, 1992

For consignment, a 1992 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am convertible in classic green and tan combination and sporting a unique side exhaust configuration.

Note: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area

Exterior
Dark Jade Green Metal is noted here and according to thirdgen.org, only 30 convertibles were painted this color, while another 310 were straight Green Metallic making green a rare color for '92 convertible Trans Ams. The dual snout on the hood is balanced in appearance by the inset marker and fog lights on the front fascia that look somewhat like intake ducts. Let's look at the car in profile where some notable features present themselves. Deeply ridged cladding lifts from the door and continues onto the rear quarter while an extra body part below the rocker panel gives the illusion of side pipes and we'll describe it when we get the car up on a lift. Meanwhile, airbags on the car have failed so a fixed position lift kit has been added and creates lots of space between the 16-inch wheels and the wheel openings. With the top down, the straight shoulder line travels back to a rear wing, then a 90 degree turn down the vertical tail. That tail is adorned with a one year only taillight design which has been augmented by a couple of Firebird decals. Imperfections include scuffs and chipping on the cladding, discoloration or deglazing of the clear, various scratches and scuffs.

Interior
Custom work inside combines tan leather with green and starts on the door panels where a swooping green armrest is surrounded by contouring embossed accent lines. The Trans Am bucket seats wear a green stripe that flares at the very top and very front of the seat bottom and this pattern in mirrored in the rear 2+2 seating where tan, stitched leather make up the side walls and house speakers, while flanking the center console which is a boxed unit that flows from the front seats. Other than some wear on the driver's seat, the buckets are in good condition. A winged steering wheel fronts a custom dash, now fitted with digital gauges and Trans Am is embroidered on the passenger's dash. The center stack is the beginning of the center console and includes the A/C controls and an AM/FM/CD radio. The console flows down to meet the shifter and e-brake, now booted in tan leather. Low pile tan carpet shows some age and usage and is covered with green, carpeted mats that continue the contrasting palette.

Drivetrain
A screaming eagle adorns the underside the hood which, once lifted, reveals the engine that, according to our consignor, is a 350ci ZZ4 crate engine producing 375 horsepower and topped by a 4-barrel carburetor. A rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic transmission has a shift kit and 2,800 rpm stall converter. Headers begin the exhaust process and power brakes are supplied with disc up front and drums in the rear. The engine and bay are relatively clean and contain several polished components including a cross engine brace.

Undercarriage
Generally very clean underneath with no apparent surface rust and only the rear differential showing any oil. The dual exhaust travels under the car, encounters Cherrybomb mufflers, then makes the turn towards the side to exit. Independent suspension is front and in the rear, a torque arm is included. Steering components, stabilizer bars, brake parts, are all free of grease and dirt. A crossmember is painted metallic green.

Drive-Ability
The seats are typical for Trans Ams of this era, deep and supportive and the F-body configuration makes for a comfortable sitting position. The car fires up after we pump the gas and heads out to the test loop with plenty of acceleration and power underfoot, endless visibility with the top down, and handling that is only slightly hampered by the taller than normal height of the car. Our scorecard came back with a few minuses, including the headlights which will not rotate up, the air conditioning not working, no odometer display is present, and the horn is not honking. All other functions checked out okay. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

1992 Firebirds were the last of a breed as a complete makeover came in 1993 and rounded many of the sharp angles that defined the third generation. These are sleek cars with some unique features that stand apart, even from other third generation models. This one has a custom interior, a canvas top in good shape, and a 350 that puts out some fun power. Check in with the mall if this Firebird ignites interest.
