1970 Pontiac GTO Hardtop

Description:

1970 Pontiac GTO Hardtop

In terms of car colors, green is an outlier in 2024 when the most popular exterior colors are black, white, gray, and silver. But if you want to veer from the fleet colored mob, green is a top choice. In 1970 however, the most common colors were earth tones including shades of brown, tan, and green. This carried on to home interiors where if you didn't have avocado appliances in your kitchen and paneling on your walls, you were probably in an older house. Muscle cars came along and gave us some day-glo colors to get excited about, but for every day, green on green was ultra common.

For consignment, a 1970 Pontiac GTO hardtop with a title verified 68,293 actual miles, a green on green beauty with a vinyl top and big rear spoiler. Subtle wasn't really part of the muscle car vernacular in 1970 and along with that spoiler, gaping hood nostrils, a hood tach, and GTO written on every corner meant there was no confusing this with a pedestrian LeMans. This car appeared in the Michelle Branch and Carlos Santana video for "The Game of Love".

Exterior
Our car comes in Pepper Green and sports all the standard GTO tells which takes a mild mannered A-body car, so ubiquitous in 1970, and turns it into a street machine with the exterior cues including the big wing, hood tach, and double hood intake. The infamous Endura nose fronts the car and GTO is spelled out in the split grille. Chrome headlight bezels pick up on the metal rim of the grille and the cross bars over the marker lights. Out back, the low slung chrome bumper houses the long tail lights just above the quad exhaust tips, all looking clean and menacing. 14-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels carry staggered size tires with raised white lettering. The paint, chrome, and vinyl top are in great condition and imperfections noted included chips in the paint including on the nose piece, bubbling down low, some uneven paint over bodywork, some paint runs and some an area of underapplied paint.

Interior
A GTO badge tops the standard door panels constructed of black vinyl in varying patterns and textures. The black vinyl seats with knitted vinyl inserts are in great shape, as is the rear bench. The black GTO steering wheel is tri-spoke with a horn button on each one, a pretty nifty design feature. A wood applique surrounds the gauges on the dash, three deep and simple gauges displaying the pertinent information. A dash long strip of machined metal applique houses switches, knobs and the AM/FM radio under which we find a trio of auxiliary gauges in a pod. The center console is decorated with faux woodgrain, just like your den in 1970, and the shifter is wood handled just in front of an armrest over a storage bin. The black loop style carpet is in good shape and the perforated headliner also looks great.. The trunk has a simple plaid mat and a covered spare tire.

Drivetrain
A date-correct 400ci V8 is in the bay, shows in clean condition, and is rated at 330 horsepower. A Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor is up top and the engine is mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission leading back to a 10-bolt rear and 3.73 gears with an Auburn Positraction unit. A brake booster is evidence that the disc brakes up front and the drums out back are power assisted.

Undercarriage
We would classify this as a clean undercarriage with minimal surface rust, some oil on the pan and residual oil on the rear differential, and some foil tape under one floor pan. We don't mind the spider webs, if you've had a hobby car sit, eventually arachnids will happily move in. Meanwhile, the knuckles are clean and the dual exhaust is too as it encounters a pair of stainless steel mufflers before exiting through a pair of splitters. Coil springs are found up front and a 4 link with coil springs are out back.

Drive-Ability
Off we went around our loop at a mild pace, enjoying the sound of the engine and exhaust. The suspension functioned ideally for the straight aways, and the brakes were more than adequate for the powerful acceleration. We're thrilled that the hood tach works on this car, and we find only three things that don't, including the clock, the horn, and the reverse lights. All other items work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This green on green music video star, (or bit player), is ready for a starring role in your garage. Lights, camera, action is the name of the game as you take this legendary muscle car to car shows and Pontiac gatherings. This is one of those cars that benefits from an enthusiastic and supportive community that is active around the country, maybe even the world! If you have dreamed about owning a GTO, this one is worth a peek.
