1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 Door Sedan

Description:

1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 Door Sedan

"Cutlass Supreme. Even more of a little limousine than last year. For those who want a taste of limousine luxury in an easy to handle, mid size car, and who'd like a ride to match. Dramatically new Colonnade hardtop styling in both coupe and sedan models now makes Cutlass Supreme more of a little limousine in many ways, except price." From the 1973 Oldsmobile sales catalog.

For consignment, a 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 door sedan with a title verified 159,069 actual miles. A numbers matching, 2 owner car once the pride and joy of an airline pilot who was meticulous about his daily driver. Now suffering from a bit of exterior rust but otherwise a decent survivor with an immaculate interior. Tens of thousands of fourth gen Cutlass' were produced, but when was the last time you saw one at a car show, let alone roadworthy?

Exterior
Cranberry Red was one of 18 colors available in 1973 which included various shades of blue, gold, and green. Wideset headlights flank sectional grilles touted for their "swing away" capability, topping a hydraulic front bumper that was new for '73. Out back, a new bumper for '73 as well as new tail light treatment which may have seemed pedestrian back in the day, but looks sleek, almost aggressive today as it cants forward towards the sloping rear window. The Oldsmobile jet emblem on the nose leaves a vapor trail in the form of hood trim that hugs the nose then shoots back but does not connect with the cowl trim. The 15-inch colored steel wheels wear hubcaps that bring the 70's back in full force, they are classically cool...and color matched to the car! Imperfections include some invasive rust by the rocker panel, the front quarter panels, the rear quarters, around the base of the vinyl roof in back, and the vinyl is missing from the A-pillar.

Interior
Oxblood is the interior color denoting maroon that starts with stitch patterned uppers, a faux woodgrain accent strip, and a more complex molded plastic lower with armrest and electrical window switches. Ribbed inserts on red velour bucket seats up front look good and the driver enjoys electric adjustments. The back bench is in good shape as well and is accessed through decidedly shorter doors, while occupants are afforded ashtrays embedded on the front seat backs. Ah yes, the good old days! A sport steering wheel fronts the dashboard which is a simple affair containing two round gauges in wide coves while a clock, A/C panel and AM/FM radio are on the mid panel, dressed in faux woodgrain, and canted slightly towards the driver, cockpit style! In the center console we find an open bin for toll booth change and the shifter also based in a woodgrain panel. Red loop carpet covers the floor and looks good, the red headliner is nice, and the trunk shows usage with an older trunk liner.

Drivetrain
Presenting in driver quality conditions, the numbers matching 350ci V8 is fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 175 horsepower. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is also numbers matching and sends power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 2.73 gears. Power brakes are on board as front discs and rear drums.

Undercarriage
Surface rust covers some of the big steel components underneath as well as the exhaust, there's grease build up on the steering parts, and some residual oil on the flywheel cover. The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers and exits through steel pipes just beyond the rear bumper. Some chrome tips would really improve their appearance! Meanwhile, coil spring suspension is found in front and a 4 link with coil springs is in the back.

Drive-Ability
As a child of the 70's, this cabin is a very familiar place, although mostly viewed from the backseat. The tilted dash is a nifty feature to an otherwise basic commuter car and we're loving the center shifter as well! The 350 comes to life with a pump of the gas and first gear takes us onto the tarmac where a comfortable 1973 era ride is provided. Soft and straight, the handling is on point and this mid-size car feels big by today's standards, but has adequate power and acceleration. The clock is not working and the brake booster leaks when the pedal is pressed, but all other functions in and on this Olds worked swimmingly. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The frame is solid, the interior is darn near flawless, and the drivetrain is original and roadworthy. With the right body person addressing the rust issues, this could be a very nice period piece that is driveable and showable! We can't wait to get this one on our TikTok page because nothing gets more likes than Oldsmobiles from the 70's and 80's. They were common American commuter cars and if you didn't have one, you knew someone who did. This one deserves to be saved so warm up your English wheel and tig welder!
