1969 Pontiac Firebird Hardtop
"It used to be when dad passed out cigars he had to pass up sports cars. That day ended when we came up with our Firebird 350. Our '69 takes to kids like kids take to tadpoles. 350 is sensible. But don't forget it's still a sporty car. Which is why we offer options like an AM/FM radio, a ski rack, and a Cordova top. So when No. 2 comes along, you just might want to celebrate by buying a Firebird 350. Instead of handing out cigars." From the '69 Firebird brochure.
For consignment, a 1969 Pontiac Firebird hardtop sport coupe showing 80,819 miles which are not actual. This is a great looking car, not only because first gen Firebirds are great looking cars, but the paint and wheel choice here is a great combo and a center stripe makes this car stand out from the crowd. Let's dive in.
Exterior
A bright Blue exterior is enhanced by a gray stripe that first follows the panel bends on the hood, pointed in typical Pontiac style, then wide over the back giving way to a gray rear fascia around the epic tail lights. That's plenty cool enough but now add 17-inch Ridler wheels in the same shade of gray and you've got a stupendous presentation. The faux vents on the front quarters and rocker trim also pick up on the wheel color and what would a Firebird be without the actual bird, here on each rear quarter panel. Back to the rear, we find two tapered polished exhaust tips under a blue valance and nicely chromed bumper. Even with 45 series tires, the stance is straight and aggressive and the forward cant of the wide C-pillar and pointed nose gives this car visual forward momentum. Paint and metalwork are very nice and we could not find any glaring imperfections.
Interior
Clean and tidy door panels include vertical rib patterned inserts and horizontal silver trim with the classic configuration of window winder, door pull/armrest, actuator, and push down lock. The seats take on horizontal ribs and are in excellent condition as are the back seats that take on the same design pattern, all in black. A basic steering wheel is provided to the driver with horn buttons on each of the three spokes, and in front, a clean and basic dashboard in black plastic with two cylindrical coves, one housing the speedometer, the other three idiot lights and a gas gauge. A triple gauge pod has been added below the dash, just under an AM/FM radio and vent controls in the center stack. On the floor, a mean looking B&M shifter in an accordion rubber boot and tall base, all over black loop carpet in nice shape protected by cherry emblazoned mats. Up above, the headliner and shoulder belts look good, and the trunk is covered with a carpeted mat.
Drivetrain
Pontiac blue coats the block of this 350ci V8, topped by an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel Holley carb, with Edelbrock embossed valve covers. A TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is behind it sending power to the 10 bolt axle, while headers take the burned fuel southward.
Undercarriage
A mostly clean and dry underside does have some surface rust, mostly reserved for the headers. But the exhaust is mostly free of the stuff and hits FlowMaster mufflers before exiting via polished tips. There's some fluid on the front crossmember and the knuckles could use a cleaning, but no errant oil is seen anywhere else. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs out back.
Drive-Ability
Who doesn't love a classic Firebird, (they stopped reading a long time ago)? This is a nicely sorted car that we have the pleasure of testing around the loop where we find a healthy 350 putting out some nice power, the Turbo Hydramatic doing its job, and handling and braking that are on point. No fancy gizmos and gadgets here, just analog functionality that all works! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
What side of the aisle do you sit? Camaro or Firebird? We've got plenty of Camaros to choose from, 43 at the time of this writing. But good Firebirds are a bit harder to come by and we're happy when they grace our halls. No complaints about this one as it presents nicely with that unique paint, great wheels, a clean interior, and a fine running 350 to put a cherry on top. It's likely this bird won't be perched here long, so answer the call of the wild and call us today! As they say, the early bird catches the worm!
