1979 AMC Jeep CJ5

Description:

1979 AMC Jeep CJ5

"AMC and Kaiser Jeep were not strangers. In 1960, Chapin was in charge of AMC's International Operations and recognized the potential strength of an AMC/Jeep merger. By the mid '60s, Kaiser Jeep was buying AMC engines so business connections were made. Shortly after taking the AMC reins in 1967, Chapin made Kaiser an offer, and by February 1970, the deal was done. Chapin later said the $75 million deal was one of his best: AMC got the truck and SUV models it desperately needed to round out their dealer offering and Jeep sales benefitted from a more mainstream dealer network." Motortrend, April 2016

For consignment, a 1979 AMC Jeep CJ5 with a title verified 146,760 actual miles and the recipient of a body off restoration in 2015. New paint was applied to the chassis, underside, exterior and interior and some engine work was included to freshen the 360ci under the hood. On top of the hood, an iconic decal was included.

Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*

Exterior
Two stage Orange paint is indeed a head turner, gleaming with equal reflectivity as the chrome grille, front and rear bumpers. Glossy black fender flares are a nice match for "Golden Eagle" in black lettering on the hood, while the bird itself, (a Bald Eagle), is splayed across the hood in a diving forward position, looking mean and powerful. There's lots of polished trim on board to include the hood latches, cowl panel, hinges, rocker panel, and step up. Updated front and rear lights join 15-inch wheels with 33x12.50R15LT tires and a tan canvas bikini top to create an all around great looking rig and we could no glaring exterior imperfections.

Interior
The orange paint seamlessly spills into the interior to cover the walls and floor on which tan cloth bucket seats reside in front, nicely matching the bikini top and padded covers on the roll bar. Out back, the typical Jeep micro bench seat is adorned with the same tan cloth, flanked by speaker boxes and grilles, which are marine grade. Up front, a three spoke steering wheel fronts a flat dash, orange right up to the polished central panel that houses gauges, knobs, and the AM/FM/CD radio. A grab bar and glove box suitable to use as a mirror is presented to the passenger, all under a tan plastic dash pad which suffers from a small crack in the corner. The glossy orange floor gives way to a tall shifter rising from yet another polished plate, and a range selector with rubber accordion boot. Our consignor states a center console comes with the Jeep.

Drivetrain
The clean and show worthy presentation continues in the engine bay where a clean 360ci V8 resides, bored .040 over encasing a .518 lift cam and wearing an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and Holley 650 cfm double pumper 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a T176 3-speed manual transmission and a Dana 20 transfer case with AMC 20 axles at both ends. The front/rear brake set up is disc/drum. Orange inner fenders and firewall, ribbed valve covers and air element, headers, and a polished finish panel embossed with JEEP all help to create a desirable hoods up showing!

Undercarriage
A polished gas tank panel and rear differential cover highlight a clean underside where surface rust is minimal and oil residual is as well. Dual exhaust runs from the headers to the Flowmaster mufflers before terminating behind the rear bumper. There are no catalytic converters on board. The knuckles are clean, and leaf springs are present in the front and the back.

Drive-Ability
We step up into this cheerfully orange ride and crank the 360 which starts easily and put the four speed into first. With knobby tires and all, we set out on the test loop where the V8 delivers good power and sound, and the doorless cabin provides a hard to beat fun place to pilot the 4x4. She drives much like any other Jeep, stops well, and offers limitless visibility. Functionally, we note the heater blower is not working and one lug stud is snapped off on the front left wheel. Beyond that, everything worked as it should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Dukes of Hazzard fans take note! Daisy Duke drove a white 1980 Golden Eagle, and the Duke boys, of course, drove that bright orange Charger. Well, here are two elements of the show combined, (probably unintentionally), to create a sharp looking CJ5 in colors and decals that were never originally combined from AMC's factory, and it all works together very well. Get your country on, while at the same time being welcome at more metropolitan car events and of course, every Jeep, 4x4, and overlander event you can find! Like the talons of an eagle, this is one sharp ride!
