Attractive 1968 Ford Mustang convertible. Solid with very nice paint and bodywork. Excellent original interior. Smooth and torquey C-code 289 cubic inch V8 with automatic. Power top. The quintessential Mustang ragtop, ready to hit the road!
Mustangs are as close as weve got to the universal car, especially Mustang convertibles. Everyone likes them. And why shouldnt they? Mustangs are attractive, sturdy, reliable, and easy to live with, and for sixty years, theyve represented fun on the open road. This 1968 Ford Mustang convertible is no exception, offering a bright Candyapple Red paint job to go with its winning personality. It was refinished in the early 2000s but is holding up rather well, and the work they did was nicely done. Theres a deep gloss to the finish, but looking closer youll find there are no waves or ripples that would suggest a cut-rate job, just well-done bodywork with clear reflections and nice gaps. That probably wasnt cheap. The 68 added a few details like side marker lights and a revised grille, but its still unmistakably a Mustang, and when youre out on the road, a lot of people like what they see. Bright chrome bumpers, a bit of stainless trim that shines up beautifully, and neat details like the hood-mounted turn signal indicators all make this a car you can enjoy even if youre not in the drivers seat.
The code 2U Parchment bucket seat interior appears to be mostly original and that speaks to the easy life this car has led. The seating surfaces are definitely OEM and have a level of detail the reproduction stuff just cant match, and there are no split seams or ripped panels so it remains ready to enjoy. The carpets have probably been replaced, and the black anchors the interior and keeps it from being white overload, although we do like the bright red floor mats. Theres an aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel thats a bit smaller in diameter than the stock piece, making it easier to climb in and out, but the rest of the controls are all familiar Mustang parts. Big, round gauges with auxiliary dials up top (the oil pressure gauge is not working) and a chrome T-handle shifter between the seats. The radio is an upgraded RetroSound unit that looks vintage but has digital tuning, and it powers aftermarket speakers installed in the back seat area. The white convertible top is power-actuated, so it stows itself behind the seat with the touch of a switch, and theres a matching white boot to make it look tidy. The trunk is spacious enough for a road trip, and includes a full-sized spare and a correct mat so its nicely finished.
The engine is a C-code 289 cubic inch V8, which means a 2-barrel carburetor and about 200 horsepower. On the road, it feels torquey and energetic and the upgraded dual exhaust system makes great V8 noises when youre cruising. It remains almost entirely stock, which is good from a reliability standpoint, and its nicely finished with Ford Blue on the engine, that big factory air cleaner, and reproduction decals as the finishing touch. It starts easily, idles nicely, and generally goes about its business with a minimum of fuss, rare for a hobby car. Power steering and power brakes are welcome additions, which combine with the C4 3-speed automatic transmission to make this a car anyone can jump in and go. Underneath, youll find a clean chassis with a few well-done patches in the usual spots in the rear foot wells, but no critical structural issues and the rockers are excellent. The 8-inch rear end has easy-cruising 2.80 gears inside, and youll note a lot of new components, including the exhaust system, shocks, power steering components, and gas tank, making it ready to run. Ride quality is surprisingly good for a sporting car, and it looks right sitting on 14-inch steel wheels with factory hubcaps and recent 215/70/14 whitewall radials.
Documentation includes a shop manual and a chassis assembly manual.
