1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Hardtop Tribute

Description:

1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Hardtop Tribute

For consignment, a 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Hardtop tribute in Sublime Green, fuel injected and sporting a new hydraulic roller 440ci V8 that's putting out a dyno proven 538 horsepower. The car has a title verified 64,187 actual miles, but it now has a new motor with less than 200 miles. The car also sports rack and pinon steering and rebuilt suspension with new leaf springs and torsion bars. The new motor with a roller cam upgrade was built by Performance Injection Equipment (PIE). The Coronet has an esteemed credit to being a part of the invitational display at the 2014 Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle, a trophy winner at the 2017 Ocean City Cruisin, and a participant in other shows. What started out as a mild-mannered Coronet 500 is now a rip-roaring replica of the legendary R/T.

Exterior
Impossible to ignore, some have called Sublime Green radioactive as it's practically fluorescent in its exposure and without a doubt, the massive contrasting nostrils on the hood jump out like a giant black wave washing over you. They're borrowed from a 1969 RT, as are the side ducts and add about a million points of muscularity. The gloriously flat square face is matched only by the tail that houses ever increasing sized lights that flank the rear trim of symmetrical and vertical bars. Spectacular! The headlights. by the way. shine with green neon when on. Hood pins mean business as do the 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels with staggered size tires. A black vinyl top is in excellent condition and leads to a sloping rear window with an undulating bottom edge blending seamlessly into the long decklid with the raised center detail. The chrome and polished metal is fantastic, but the paint shows some imperfections that include some rust bubbling under the paint low on a fender behind a wheel and along the rocker panel, minor scuffs and scratches on the black stripes down low, bubbling on the rim of wheel openings, bubbling and body repair on the door corners, body filler in the leading edges of the passenger's fender, touched-up chips, and minor panel gap fitment faultiness.

Interior
Straight black door panels greet the occupants with Coronet 500 emblems discreetly embedded on the header where we also find a few chips on the painted header of the driver's door. The button backed black vinyl bucket seats are as they were in the era, flat and not entirely supportive, but these appear in good condition with a missing button on the driver's side. The rear bench is crisp and clean with its stitched vinyl pattern and appears unused. A custom aftermarket steering wheel provides some soft grip, and the standard gauges are in line with the shape of the car, rectangular and horizontal. Extra autometer gauges are added to the center of the dash just below an AM/FM/CD radio on a carbon fiber panel that continues to the passenger side dash. The chrome shifter is housed on the center console covered in a striated metal treatment with courtesy lights to the sides, all looking robust and serious. Black carpet covers the floor, the headliner is in decent condition and the trunk has a carpeted black mat and shows usage.

Drivetrain
A 440ci V8 resides under the pinned hood and it is spotless. Inside that powerplant, we have TRW forged pistons, Spreedpro rings, ARP main studs, a hydraulic roller cam with .565" lift, 242i/248e duration and a 110 centerline. Edelbrock Performer RPM heads are on board as is a FAST EFI system on an Edelbrock intake. The exhaust manifolds have been JetHot coated and an aluminum radiator with custom aluminum fan shroud has been added. Transferring the power is a new 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission with less than 2000 miles, which sends it to the 8 " rear with 2.76 gears. Power brakes are employed on the car with disc up front and drums out back.

Undercarriage
Clean driver quality is how we would classify the underside. Very little surface rust to speak of and no oil dripping. The dual exhaust finds Dynomax mufflers before exiting under the rear bumper. A Unisteer rack and pinion power steering is here along with a rear sway bar, a new front sway bar, new shocks and springs, while torsion bars make up the front suspension.

Drive-Ability
Starts right up with the electronic fuel injection and announces its presence with a rumble from the dual exhaust. The car tracks well on the test loop, has great throttle response and plenty of power on hand and the braking to back it up. All functions work as they should with the exception of the reverse lights.

It's not just the color of this car that says, "Coming through, get out of my way..." it's the stance, the muscular width, the scoops everywhere, and that flat front that just sort of grimaces. This is a very nice tribute at a fraction of the cost of a real R/T and this one has fuel injection for the win! Come check out this neon wonder and ride off into the sunset. We look forward to watching those taillights disappear!
