1965 Plymouth Belvedere II Hardtop

Description:

1965 Plymouth Belvedere II Hardtop

Basic intermediate sized transportation was the name of the game for the 1960's Belvederes and it wasn't until 1967 when the high performance GTX was introduced. 1965 represented a one year design with minimal changes while retaining the handsome lines of previous and forthcoming iterations. Its single headlights surrounded an unobscured grille and the marker lights were embedded in the chrome bumper below. Accessories added determined the designation of Belvedere I and Belvedere II.

For consignment, a 1965 Plymouth Belvedere II that has a lot of new parts, a history of some restoration, and comes to the new owner with a ton of build photos and receipts. If it wasn't standing high on its haunches and wearing Torque Thrust wheels, this would be a proverbial sleeper. As is, however, you might want to avoid red light confrontations with it. Unless you're driving it, of course.

Exterior
This car wears a two stage coat of Bright Red intersected by a metal trimmed black spear that runs the length of the car on a car that displays a mix of varying angles in its profile. The nose leans forward while the windshield leans back and takes the vent and side windows with it. The C-pillar is vee shaped and leans forward while the curved rear window follows its line, leading to a flat trunk and a rear leaning tail. A wonderfully simple front end has the grid of the grille mirrored in the headlight surround and the more elaborate tail has square taillights and black bar that bridges them. 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels have staggered size tires that provide a muscular look and outsize what the car came with in 1965 by a wide margin. The paint, brightwork, emblems, and panel gaps are all in excellent condition.

Interior
Mixed patterns and texture occupy the black vinyl door cards which are in great shape and lead to thick split bench seat, also in black vinyl and also in great condition. The rear bench seat and the sidewalls are in near mint condition and include the obligatory ash trays because this was 1965 after all. The stock appearing steering wheel shares its narrow column with a big tachometer with yellow shift light while the 120 speedometer on the dashboard and other gauges are square in design, fitting for the period and make. A center AM radio is in place followed by an aluminum glove box and an aftermarket gauge pod underneath. A B&M shifter is floor mounted over black loop carpet, all looking clean. The stitched headliner is in good condition as well along with the trunk which is clean and covered by the period plaid mat.

Drivetrain
Beautifully clean and shiny under the hood sits a 440ci V8 of 1966-1972 vintage. This one has been rebuilt with a .030 bore, forged pistons, a balanced rotating assembly, Comp cam, Edelbrock E-street heads, and Crane aluminum roller rockers. On top of the Edelbrock intake manifold sits a big 780 cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetor. The A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission has been rebuilt as well as has the 8 rear. TTI headers grab the expended gas and send it on its way to the TTI exhaust. Power disc brakes live up front with power drums out back.

Undercarriage
Spectacularly clean underneath with barely any surface rust and just a touch of residual fluid on the transmission pan. Beyond that, clean, flat black paint and solid dual exhaust through stock style mufflers and exiting out the back with downward facing pipes. New tie rods and shocks accompany the torsion bar suspension in front and leaf springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
Aside from the radio not working, this car provides an E-ticket ride with plenty of power on tap, a great sounding bellowing V8, and a boss stance that gives it a mean attitude. Everything else worked, from the lights to the gauges to the brakes. Next stop, a nice parking spot inside the mall!

Square chin, broad shoulders, and a powerful punch. We could be referring to Joe Frazier, or this 1965 Belvedere. This is a fantastic Mopar that stands out in every way, from the clean interior, the "eat off the floor" underside, to the well done powerplant. While there are no sales patterns here at the mall, we can say with some confidence that this one will not be here long. Is that you answering the bell? Round 1 is underway.
