1987 Ford Mustang The third generation of the Ford Mustang, known as the "Fox Body" was produced from 1979 to 1993. It marked a return to a more performance-oriented and sporty direction for the Mustang, following the fuel crisis-induced changes of the previous generation.

Introduced in 1979, the third-gen Mustang featured a sleeker and more aerodynamic design, with a prominent grille and quad headlights. It was larger and more substantial than the previous generation, offering more interior space and improved driving dynamics.

Under the hood, the third-gen Mustang offered a variety of engine options, ranging from inline-four and V6 engines to powerful V8s. While the available horsepower figures were still relatively modest in the early years, the Mustang regained its performance image as the 1980s progressed, especially with the introduction of the Mustang GT trim in 1982.

In 1984, the Mustang received a significant update with the introduction of the SVO model. The Mustang SVO featured a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, advanced suspension, and aerodynamic enhancements, making it a high-performance variant.

In 1987, the Mustang underwent a restyling, adopting a more contemporary appearance with a sleeker roofline and a revised interior.

In 1993, Ford released a limited-production model known as the Mustang SVT Cobra. The Cobra featured a powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine and various performance upgrades, becoming a sought-after model among enthusiasts.

The third-gen Mustang's success contributed to its longevity, as it remained in production for a remarkable 15 years. It solidified the Mustang's status as an American automotive icon and laid the groundwork for the continued success and evolution of the Mustang in subsequent generations.
