1979 Honda CBX Custom
VIN: CB1-2017822
For Honda's iconic CBX, it was all about the motor. At a time when its rivals offered four cylinders or less, Honda's 24 valve DOHC 1050cc six cylinder Goliath delivered turbine-smooth power, a distinctive exhaust note (think Ferrari V12) and, for the first time, a production motorcycle capable of 11 second quarter mile times fresh out of the crate. It also offered dual disc brakes up front, a disc in back, and air adjustable front shocks, but it was the eye-popping motor on display that showcased this most extraordinary motorcycle of the '60s-'70s “naked bike” era.
This first year CBX is a numbers matching bike with standard running gear that has been cosmetically customized in such a way as to further highlight its stunning motor. The paint work looks like the one-year-only black offered in 1980, but actually reveals in bright sunlight as a midnight pearl blue. The white center stripe is correctly applied to the tank and tail piece, as are the correct gold pinstripes and Super Sport and CBX script and decals on the tank and side covers. In a departure from original the same white center stripe with gold pin stripe theme is further extended to the front fender, and the exhaust system has received a coat of flat black paint to further draw the eye to the gleaning engine that is what this bike is all about. The mechanical and electrical components remain as the factory made them, with the exception of custom short turn signal stalks housing smaller smoke lenses for a more tidy over-all appearance.
This CBX was purchased in 2010 by the current owner with the odometer showing just over 17,500 miles, and received a complete service at that time to insure that all mechanical and electrical systems and components were operating correctly. The bike was again serviced and repainted in 2015. In 2019, at 20,050 miles, the bike received another complete service and the clutch, transmission, and carburetors were rebuilt at North County Motorcycle in Escondido. The bike has been carefully maintained and sparingly ridden since, and the odometer currently shows 20,558 miles.
