Part of Buick's more modern 1940 lineup, the Buick Eight Convertible reflected the division's growing emphasis on streamlined styling and comfortable open-air motoring. Redesigned under General Motors' "torpedo" styling influence, the 1940 models featured a wider grille, integrated fenders, and flowing body lines that gave Buick a more elegant and contemporary appearance. Buyers could choose from several engine and trim levels, all powered by Buick's dependable overhead valve inline-eight engine, known for its smooth operation and effortless performance. Convertible models were produced in limited numbers compared to closed-body styles, making them more desirable today. Combining graceful Art Deco-inspired design and Buick's reputation for quality, the 1940 Buick Convertible remains an admired collectible American open automobile.
This Buick Convertible is a lovely example from the intimate pre-war era and has enjoyed the care of the same collector for the last five years. During his ownership, it was repainted in its attractive and correct shade of cream over a lavish maroon trimmed cabin. The body by Fisher is dressed in impressive chrome trim throughout and equipped with dual fog lights, front and rear bumpers, Buick wheels with red beauty rings wrapped in new wide whitewall tires. Offering open-air motoring, it features a tan convertible soft top and matching boot cover. The finely restored interior features comfortable bench seating, a faux woodgrain dash, and engine-turned dashboard and glovebox affixed with a clock and radio.
During current ownership, this example was also mechanically gone through which included the fuel system, braking system, suspension, and tried and true Dynaflash straight-eight engine and manual transmission. It remains well-sorted and offers its next owner a compelling Buick that can be enjoyed on collector car tours and causal weekend drives with room for four lucky occupants.
Once the complete cosmetic and mechanical freshening were finished, this example was awarded a class award at the Buick Nationals meet. Lovingly cared for and looked after, this 1940 Buick Convertible offers its next owner the opportunity to experience the smooth, effortless power of Buick's renowned Dynaflash straight-eight while enjoying relaxed open-air touring just as its original designers intended.
