1950 Jaguar MK V Drophead Coupe

Description:

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Chassis No.
T9610

The Jaguar Mark V Drophead Coupe was introduced in 1948 and represented Jaguars confident return to civilian automobile production following World War II and marked a step in the companys transition from pre-war traditions into a more modern era of design and engineering. Although its styling retained many classic British elements, including sweeping fenders, a tall upright grille, and flowing coach built proportions, the Mark V was thoroughly updated beneath the surface and showcased Jaguars growing reputation for performance and refinement. The Mark V was available in Saloon, Drophead Coupe, and two-door fixed-head configurations, with the elegant Drophead Coupe standing as the most luxurious and sporting open-bodied offering in the lineup. Riding on an all-new chassis developed by Jaguar Founder Sir William Lyons and Engineer William Heynes, the Mark V introduced independent front suspension to the marque for the first time, greatly improving ride quality and handling compared to its rigid pre-war predecessors. Hydraulic brakes also replaced the earlier mechanical system, further modernizing the driving experience. Power came from Jaguars proven overhead-valve inline six-cylinder engine, offered in both 2.5-litre and larger 3.5-litre forms, the latter producing approximately 125 horsepower and providing impressive performance for a luxury touring automobile of the period. Smooth, quiet, and capable of sustained high-speed touring, the Mark V helped solidify Jaguars identity as a manufacturer of refined sporting motorcars. Today, the 1950 Jaguar Mark V Drophead Coupe is admired for its graceful proportions, handcrafted detailing, and noted place in Jaguar history. Combining pre-war elegance with meaningful post-war engineering advancements, it remains as one of the marques more attractive and desirable early luxury touring automobiles. The recipient of an older comprehensive restoration, this lovely 1950 Jaguar Mark V Drophead Coupe has been in the care of the same collection since 2014. Documented by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, it was built on April 24th, 1950, and dispatched from the factory on May 12th of that same year. The elegant proportions and flowing curves are well suited as they are draped in a two-tone color scheme of black and tan with dual blue pinstriping that runs the length of the beltline. Its exterior elegance is furthered thanks to the rear fender skirts and black convertible soft top with chrome landau bars flanking both sides. The interior is just as posh and features biscuit leather and faux wood trim throughout. Under the front bonnet lies the numbers-matching, larger, and more desirable 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine that produces a factory-rated 125 horsepower. Backed by a four-speed manual gearbox, its drivability and reliability are upgraded thanks to a 12-volt electrical system and electronic ignition. Accompanying the sale of this Jaguar is a rare set of factory tools and its previously mentioned JDHT certificate. Built in small numbers, as this example is 1 of just 977 Drophead Coupes produced, it would make a splendid addition to future Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) outings and JCNA driving tours. * 1 of approximately 977 Drophead Coupes produced * Equipped with the more desirable 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine * Upgraded to a 12-volt electrical system and electronic ignition * The recipient of an older comprehensive restoration * Documented by its JDHT Certificate * A Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classic From the Kruse Auctions
