1957 Airstream Travel Trailer

Description:

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Airstream's story began in 1929 when Wally Byam constructed his first travel trailer by fitting a tent-like body onto a Ford Model T chassis. He soon refined the concept, replacing the fabric structure with a permanent, teardrop-shaped body and adding practical amenities such as a stove and an ice chest. Public interest grew rapidly, prompting Byam to write an article for Popular Mechanics explaining how to build one. The response was so strong that he began selling plans, and before long, his side project evolved into a full-fledged business with a workshop in Culver City, California. Airstream's first true production model, the Torpedo, followed shortly thereafter, and by 1932 more than 1,000 examples had been sold. As the travel trailer market expanded and competitors appeared, Airstream distinguished itself as the benchmark for both design and engineering. The 1957 Airstream Caravanner stands as a superb example of mid-century American craftsmanship, combining lightweight construction with thoughtful luxury. Measuring 22 feet in overall length with a 19-foot body, it rides on an all-steel chassis and features a structural aluminum frame. Its signature double-shell, hand-riveted aluminum body is insulated with aircraft-grade fiberglass, providing both strength and comfort. The streamlined profile, formed using jet aircraft-style stretch-formed front and rear panels, contributes to improved aerodynamics and efficiency. With a weight of approximately 2,800 pounds and a 270-pound hitch weight, it is notably easy to tow, while shock absorbers and electric brakes ensure stable, confident road manners. This particular Caravanner remains a highly original example, having received only light refurbishment as needed over the years. Long displayed in a museum setting, it has seen minimal use. The interior is thoughtfully arranged to balance comfort with practicality. Space is used efficiently, with sleeping accommodations, integrated storage, and a well-appointed galley for preparing meals on the road. A lounge area converts into additional sleeping space, complemented by a dedicated bed for restful nights. The kitchen is equipped with essential appliances, a sink, and a refrigerator, and a fold-down dining table adds flexibility. A full bathroom with toilet, shower, and sink enhances convenience, while a heating system ensures comfort in cooler conditions. Details such as hardwood cabinetry, durable flooring, and generous natural light from large windows and roof vents create a warm, inviting environment. Finished in classic Airstream style and equipped with a steel bumper and electric brakes for added safety, this 1957 Caravanner is a true symbol of American travel culture. Early and well-preserved Airstreams like this make as the ideal companion for a period-correct post-war sedan or truck, perfect for traveling in style to shows, events, and swap meets. * A true symbol of American travel culture * Thoughtful interior with a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping quarters, and living space * All-steel chassis and electric brakes * Ready for traveling in style to shows, events, swap meets, and campgrounds From the Kruse Auctions
