Chevrolet set the automotive world on fire in the fall of 1962 when the all-new Corvette "Sting Ray" was unleashed. While many pundits of the day immediately started to conclude that GM's inspiration must have come from the equally sleek and sporty E-Type Jaguar which had premiered two years earlier, the truth was the new Corvette's styling had come from designs created by GM's Vice President of Styling Bill Mitchell. Based on his XP-700, the original "Sting Ray", the new Corvette copied the front wedge designs which flowed through the sleek rear-end fascia. With refinement provided by Larry Shinoda, the production Corvette was a bumper-to-bumper winning silhouette of perfection.
While removable hardtops had been offered for previous models, the new-for-1963 enclosed edition was a major step forward, adding significantly to the slipstream and smoothness of the entire package. One feature that did not win approval from many, at least from the start, was the new split-window design. Drivers complained of limited rearward visibility, and GM quickly resolved that by removing the split in future models. As a result, that one design element has set the 1963 coupe apart from all other Sting Rays and has now made it one of the most sought after and collectible Corvettes ever built.
A highly original example from the historic 1963 model year, this spilt-window Corvette shows just 38,582 miles from new. Cared for by its original owner until 2008, its original and desirable Silver Blue paint over its original Dark Blue interior, shows the typical signs of patina and mellowing from 63 years of enthusiast enjoyment. Documented by its original window sticker and protection plan booklet, Richard Litsinger purchased this Vette new from A.D. Anderson Chevrolet in Baltimore, Maryland. Documented by an affidavit and records, underneath the hood lies its numbers-matching 327-cubic-inch V-8 engine that produces 300 horsepower and is backed by its four-speed manual transmission. Documentation is extensive, with its original dealership documents, period title, service records, and Maryland Department of Transportation tag stickers.
Highly original, low miles, and retaining its factory finishes and numbers-matching drivetrain, this 1963 Split-Window embodies the authenticity that has made these one-year-only Corvettes among the most sought-after American sports cars ever built.
