1973 Datsun 240Z Coupe
The legendary Z-car lineup has a history spanning more than 50 years. No fewer than six distinct Z-car models have been introduced and made their way to North America during that time, but when you take into account all of Nissan's sports cars, the brand has over 40 models available. The Datsun/Nissan Z-car is one of the most legendary and celebrated sports car brands in the world, with a long history of ups and downs, but mostly ups.
For consignment, a 1973 Datsun 240Z coupe with a title verified 92,472 actual miles. This is a one owner car which has been well maintained over the years including not only the regular oil changes, but upgraded to address early Z issues and last year, all hoses in the engine bay were replaced. This is a rare find that will not be here long, so read quickly!
Exterior
In the 80's, this car received a new, two stage coat of Dark Carmine Red Metallic paint, a familiar hue for the Z and with its long nose and inset headlights, this ""personal GT"" from 1973 is looking good. Its unmistakable shape continues in profile where the roofline gently slopes flush with the rear hatch window and finally the hatch itself and that's where the vertical rear valance begins, housing those now iconic two part tail lights on a black panel, over a wrap around chrome bumper which hugs the rear quarter. The front seam of the doors is unique as it juts forward into the front fender, allowing for easier access to this low car which sits on 14-inch turbine style wheels. Imperfections include some minor inclusions, chips throughout, overspray, filler on the lower quarters and separation, blistering down low and throughout, and areas of orange peel.
Interior
Touted by Car and Driver as a comfortable interior, this car looks like it's going to satisfy those magazine claims, starting with a smooth door panel in Saddle vinyl with a single bead of metallic trim and a door opener that is floor level because that where your hand will naturally drop, and the driver's door shows slight patina. Our tall black buckets seats wear tan vinyl covers and the sport steering wheel is also wrapped by an added vinyl grip. Up front, a concise dashboard with two tunneled gauges relaying speed and RPM's in a molded plastic dash while three other gauges turn towards the driver from the center above a tidy center stack that contains vent controls and an AM/FM/CD radio with Bluetooth. A lovely wood handled shifter wears a leather boot loosely on the center hump that has been covered in attractive diamond stitch patterned vinyl over black loop carpet and mats, all in great condition. The black vinyl headliner is smooth and so is the black carpet in the hatch area, augmented with more diamond stitched saddle vinyl dressing the strut towers. There's also an added speaker unit in the back, relatively unobtrusive.
Drivetrain
This car was driven and enjoyed, not shown, and the engine is a fine example of its use. Here is a 2.4 liter SOHC inline six cylinder putting out 150 horsepower and now fueled by a a pair of Weber carburetors, introduced early to address noted Z vapor lock issues. The 4-speed manual routes power to the rear axle of course, and there it will find 3.36 gearing.
Undercarriage
Driver quality is noted here as well with typical surface rust and some advanced, flaking surface rust on one panel. There's also some bubbling on the bottom of the driver's door. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and runs through a tunnel on its way to the back. Power brakes are divided as front disc and rear drums and the fully independent suspension consists of Macpherson struts in front and struts type arrangement in back.
Drive-Ability
The six banger starts right up and shifting gears in this eager little car rivals some of the Brits we've tested. It's spry and handles very well, all while providing a cozy but comfortable cabin from which to pilot it. Of note, we list the clock not working but all other operations in and around the car work as they should. Is there a sports car in 2026 that is commonly used daily, that perhaps we take for granted, and that one day will be an outstanding and collectable classic? Toyota GR86? Today's Nissan Z? Supra? Hard to say. What isn't a mystery is that the 200 series Z-cars are now uncommon and very collectible, and this one owner car is well sorted, a good runner, and cosmetically nice.
